Challenge

Part of Appleshed’s ethos is to walk our talk as much as possible, part of Katrina’s belief is that Social Entrepreneur’s and Enterprises are key to a sustainable future for the planet and society and wanted to get a little more involved.  After reading many books and articles on the subject and engaging with different business owners trying to be financially independent whilst filling a societal need not currently being met by government nor businesses, the respect for people entering this are of business/charitable effort only grew.  Katrina wanted to know more.

Process

An opportunity arose to be involved in a National Lottery grant fund and over 5 months, Katrina reviewed social enterprises for their integrity, impact, reputation, financial stability, legal make-up, effect from the pandemic and their goals for the future. She has started to understand the complexity of the world they work in and both the joy and heartbreak of trying to create positive impact for people and planet alike. Many conversations were had with business owners and some became firm favourites.

At the end of the project, those working with the SSE (School for Social Entrepreneurs) partner organisation were sent a packet of Native Englsh Wildflower seeds from Seeds of Hope and a box of chocolates from Harry Specters – further supporting two fabulous social enterprises. It was appreciated, a delight to receive – the chocolates were truly delicious and my wildflower meadow has begun under my baby birch tree forest.

Conclusion

Katrina is looking to work more in this space and to understand how her background can help social enterprises further. It would be fantastic for Appleshed to build an arm of work supporting Social Entrepreneurs and Enterprises.
